The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) - Progress and opportunities
Main session objectives:
The main objective of this side event is to shed light on how CAP enables national alerting authorities and other actors in emergency management to enhance public alerting at scales from village or city to province, nation, region, and global. The speakers will share experiences and lessons learned in leveraging CAP toward the ideal goal of all-hazards and all-media emergency alerting that reaches everyone in harm's way with timely and appropriate messaging, enabling them to take actions to protect lives and livelihoods.
Expected outcomes:
- Actors in the public alerting areas of emergency management share knowledge of workable policies and implementation strategies in a range of settings worldwide.
- Alerting authorities gain a better understanding of ways to implement CAP initially or to enhance their CAP implementation, and the benefits to be realized by doing so.
- Aggregators of CAP alerts and other intermediaries in public alerting are put in contact with other actors so that they are better enabled to share expertise and experiences.
Key messages:
- The CAP standard is being leveraged in an increasing number of countries worldwide to greatly improve emergency alerting so that everyone in harm's way receives timely and appropriate messages that enable them to take actions in protection of lives and livelihoods.
- A major challenge is to help developing countries to better take advantage of the CAP standard, primarily through coordinated, cross-agency efforts at outreach, education, and the sharing of expertise.
